You can see the monolith from far away! It looks almost like a dream so all of the folklore surrounding it makes sense.
Remember the movie "Close Encounters"? P and I watched the old movie before we left town just for fun. :)
Two graphics that show two of the many theories regarding it's origins. It is accepted fact that the tower was once a large rock buried underground. Natural erosion and the Belle Fourche River wore away the sediment once around it. Fascinating!
The Native Americans called it many names including "Bear". Folklore told of the giant bear scratching his paws to create the vertical patterns on the rock. H wasn't convinced that was true. :)
