Day at Chimney Rock State Park & Lake Lure

Wet met Aunt S in the southern part of North Carolina.  Our first visit was Chimney Rock State Park!   The tall, rocky cliffs were featured in the 1992 movie "Last of the Mohicans".

The flag pole cliff outlook is reached by a staircase of 500 steps.  Of course, we had to do it!  We followed our 500-step climb with another trail to an awesome waterfall.

The view from the parking lot of the park.  That flag pole in the distance was our destination!

Looking at Lake Lure and the town of Chimney Rock.

Small caverns on the climb down to explore!  This is the "subway".

We were very accomplished!  Even if our legs hurt for three days afterwards!

Our next goal -- to find the waterfall from the Mohicans movie!  A trail led us there and the boys and I jumped in the shallow pool at the bottom.

Lake Lure is a historic tourist stop in the southern mountains in North Carolina.  The movie "Dirty Dancing" was filmed here including the famous sequence when the actors practice their dancing lift in the lake. Here are the boys swimming on the man-made Lake Lure beach.

H overheard us talking about "Dirty Dancing" and asked "How was the dancing dirty?"  I responded that in the movie the women are all dressed up in pretty dance dresses and one of them runs out of the party and falls in mud.  All of her friends follow her and then all of the girls fall in the mud in their pretty dancing dresses.  H replied, "sounds like a stupid movie."  Yes, H, it was stupid movie.  Ha!

We finished the day with a (unfortunate) dinner at a tacky tourist trap.  H ordered a brownie for dessert that was straight out of a Duncan Hines box -- nostalgia from 40 years ago!   The only impressive thing about dinner was watching a storm roll in as we sat and watched the lake. We finished up and made it to our car as the rain started to fall!

A rainbow emerged as we drove back to the rental house.  Very exciting.  The boys took pictures and wanted me to send them to their Dad ASAP!
